EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL

HOW CRITICAL IS EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL?

The use of Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is mandated by the USGA in maintaining a legitimate Handicap Index. A Handicap Index determined from scores to which ESC has not been applied is not a legitimate Handicap Index. For the purposes of The Ridgefield Golf Club, if you do not have a legitimate Handicap Index, you can not compete in Club Tournaments.  Without a legitimate Handicap Index, the Club’s Handicap Chairperson will not be able to verify your Handicap Index for other Club or State sponsored Tournaments.

WHAT IS EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL?

ESC is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a players potential. There is no limit on the number of holes on which a player must adjust his score during a given round. ESC determines the maximum score you can take on any given hole.

HOW IS EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL APPLIED?

Based on you Course Handicap, ESC determines the maximum score you can record on any hole for posting purposes.  The chart below indicates the maximum score you can record for individual holes for posting purposes.

If your Course Handicap is:                          The Maximum score you can post for
                                                                        any Hole is:

9 or less                                                          Double Bogey
10 through 19                                                 7
20 through 29                                                 8
30 through 39                                                 9
40 or more                                                      10

During any round of golf you play including Club Competitions, you should record  your actual score on your score card. Prior to posting your score in the Handicap Computer you are required to downward adjust each hole score which is above the maximum limit set by ESC.

EG: A  Golfer with a Course Handicap of 23 plays a round of Golf. He shoots a 98.
On three holes he has recorded two 9’s and one 10. Under ESC, the two 9’s and
the 10 are reduced to 8.  The  98 is reduced to 94. The 94 is the score
that is posted in the computer.
